VI. OSTEITIS DEFORMANS: FACETS DISEASE. Definition.—A rare disease of the bones, characterized by the absorp-tion anil new formation of bone tissue, which remains for a time uncalcifiedand leads to curvatures, over-growth and other deformities of the skeleton. Etiology. — Predisposing Influexces. — Both sexes are liable tothe disease. Of the reported cases about twice as many occurred in malesas in females. Age is more important. The first symptoms have com-monly shown themselves after the fortieth year. The onset of the diseasein one instance occurred about the age of twenty-one. As the disease ischronic and progressive and in most instances unattended by subjectivesymptoms, the cases have usually come under observation at a periodmore or less remote from the time of onset. In the majority of instancesthe first symptoms have been observed in middle rather than in advancedlife. The influence of heredity is uncertain. In three instances, however,cases have occurred in two members of the same family. Occupation isaltogether without influence in predisposing to the disease.
